First, ask the agency how long they have been in business. A social services and welfare organization with several years of experience should be able to provide the best services. Ask the agency what types of services they offer. Some common services include worker’s rights, income assistance, abuse and domestic violence counseling, foster care and adoption supervision, family and group therapy, employee assistance, disability rights, job training, substance abuse reform, child system applications for custody, and anti-poverty assistance. Ask the organization if they have social workers that have earned degrees that will help them give you the counseling that you need in specific areas. Some of the social workers have been trained to provide psychological treatment while others are trained to help workers and welfare recipients get the job and financial assistance they deserve. Ask the agency if they have a department that addresses your specific needs. Most of the social service and welfare organizations that you contact will be non-profits. Depending on your income, though, you might need to pay for some of the services that you receive so be sure to ask them about any charges before you use them.
